The artwork
Portrait and a Dream is a monumental canvas that stages a radical confrontation between the unconscious and identity. Across two thirds of the surface slides a tangle of white and black lines, spatters and pours, graphic vortices breathing a dark, primordial energy: the “dream”, mental unrest, the raw matter of the soul. On the opposite side emerges a distorted face, with harsh, anguished proportions, built with aggressive brushstrokes and warm, contrasting colours: yellow, orange, black. They seem to be chaos and consciousness, dream and self-portrait, pain and awareness.
The work brutally conveys inner complexity: memory, trauma and the desire to communicate the unspeakable all flow into it. It is a “portrait of the soul”, cruel, true and unfiltered, in which painting becomes voice, confession, visual scream.
