The artwork
Mark Rothko's painting entitled "Portrait" (1939) is a stylised portrait of a young man, in a room with a window letting in a soft light. The subject, with stylised features and simplified forms, stands out against a background of warm, earthy colours, typical of Rothko's painting style in this period.
This work dates from the period when Rothko was still exploring a figurative language, before evolving towards the abstraction that would make him famous. The figures in this phase of his career are often monochromatic, stylised and emotionally charged, as in this portrait, which conveys a sense of solitude and introspection.
