The artwork
An original and luminous eighteenth-century depiction of the Port of Venice, with a view from St. Mark's Basin, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the basin with all the boats, some anchored on the shore, while others are navigating the Grand Canal. The painting depicts the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's bell tower, and the other buildings in the square from afar. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1745. Two other variations of this work exist.
