The artwork
Dramatic depiction of a sailing ship wreck in the port of Livorno in the 1700s, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert. On dry land, a sailor carries a shipwrecked woman on his shoulders, while another castaway is about to be rescued. A strong wind is blowing, a storm is raging offshore, the sailing ship has now landed and is no longer able to maneuver. The sea is very rough, with white waves breaking. The lighthouse is depicted in the background, and the sky is clear, while near the port, dark, threatening clouds loom.
