In the House of Venus in the Shell in Pompeii, a fresco depicts a statue of the god Mars, placed on the south wall of the peristyle. This painting, to the left of the central fresco showing Venus on a shell, shows Mars standing upright, armed with spear and shield, symbols of war and protection. The fresco underlines the importance of Mars as a protective deity of Pompeii, often associated with Venus, highlighting the connection between love and war in Roman mythology.
