In Pompeii, numerous lararia—household shrines dedicated to the Lares, protective deities of the home and family—feature frescoes symbolising protection and fertility. A notable example is the lararium discovered in Regio V, with a painted decoration measuring about 4 by 5 metres. The walls depict natural landscapes with plants and birds, while at the centre is an altar flanked by two serpents, symbols of prosperity and protection.
Another significant example is the fresco depicting the god Priapus, deity of fertility, discovered in a domus on the Via del Vesuvio. In this depiction, Priapus is shown weighing his member on a pair of scales, a symbol of abundance and good fortune.
