The work
In Pompeii, numerous lararia—domestic shrines dedicated to the Lares, the protective deities of the home and family—feature frescoes symbolizing protection and fertility. A notable example is the lararium discovered in Regio V, characterized by a painted decoration measuring about 4 by 5 meters. The walls depict natural landscapes with plants and birds, while in the center is an altar flanked by two serpents, symbols of prosperity and protection.
Another significant example is the fresco depicting the god Priapus, deity of fertility, discovered in a domus on the road to Vesuvius. In this representation, Priapus is depicted while weighing his member on a scale, a symbol of abundance and good luck.
