The work
The fresco "Eros Punished in the Presence of Aphrodite" is a Roman artwork from the 1st century AD, found in the House of Punished Love in Pompeii. It is currently preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The scene depicts Eros, the god of love, in chains, led by the goddess Peitho (Persuasion) to the presence of Aphrodite, his mother, who sits on a rock with Anteros, symbol of reciprocated love, at his side. The fresco illustrates the theme of discipline and control of passions, highlighting the importance of balance in human emotions.
