The artwork
Painting with Red Spot (Bild mit rotem Fleck) is a oil on canvas painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1914. It belongs to his period of greatest lyrical abstraction, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, which forced him to leave Germany. The work is a vibrant example of his lyrical abstract style, characterised by anexplosion of forms and colours in motion. At first sight the painting appears as a chaotic vortex of coloured patches, broken lines and amorphous shapes floating and colliding in space.
The focal point of the work is the central "red spot", which is not a defined shape but an area of intense colour that immediately draws the eye. This red may suggest energy, passion or even danger, depending on the interpretation. Around this spot other forms develop in shades of blue, yellow and green, often outlined by black lines. Kandinsky intended the viewer to experience the painting on a purely emotional and spiritual level, without trying to recognise objects or scenes. The work is animprovisation that expresses the artist's state of mind and his deep convictions about the capacity of colour and form to communicate directly with the soul.
