The artwork
A bright and original view of the town of Pirna and Sonnenstein Castle, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The castle stands out in the center, perched on a hill and well-lit, while the town of Pirna is further downstream with its houses and palaces.
The Elbe River is the painting's central motif: its waters, with several boats traversing them, reflect the town of Pirna. The sky is slightly cloudy. The painting is dated 1756. Another version of this work with differente colours exists.
