The artwork
An original and very fine photograph depicting the Pietà, painted by Giovanni Bellini.
The Pietà (or Dead Christ Supported by Mary and John) is a tempera painting on panel (86 x 107 cm (33.9 x 42.1 in)) by Giovanni Bellini, datable to around 1465-1470 and held in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The panel is usually dated to the years when Giovanni Bellini's work was decisively breaking free from the influence of his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna, to whom the artist was bound not only by family ties but also by shared cultural interests.
