The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, with a detail of some of the buildings opposite, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Riva degli Schiavoni quay, bustling with people and used as a landing stage for smaller vessels, including gondolas. The Grand Canal dominates the scene, bustling with boats of various sizes. On the left side, we can see a portion of the Doge's Palace, set to one side and flanked by other buildings along the Riva degli Schiavoni. The sky is slightly cloudy, tinged with pale blue and white clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740. Canaletto created two other versions of this work.
