Original and luminous view of the Piazzetta of St Mark with a detail of the Column of St Mark, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground we can see the Column of St Mark, seen frontally, overlooking the Piazzetta. At the foot of the pier there are scenes of daily life and several boats, including two sailing ships. Further in the background the buildings on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore are depicted. The sky is clear but with a few dark clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730.
