An original and luminous 18th-century view of St Mark's Square by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with St Mark's Basilica and its bell tower. The gaze sweeps across the square: in the distance the bell tower soars upwards, with the other Venetian palazzi arranged on either side. The square is full of people in scenes of everyday life. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this picture.
