An original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with St Mark’s Basilica on the left. The gaze is directed eastwards, with the soaring bell tower and the other Venetian buildings arranged on either side. The square is full of people, with scenes of everyday life. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this picture.
