The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, from the colonnade of the Procuratie Nuove, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, on the right, is a detail of the colonnade, with a few notables gathered together. Further back are the bell tower of St Mark’s and the Basilica, with the square busy with visitors and townspeople. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1756. Three other versions of the same work exist.
The painting is on display at the National Gallery, London, UK.
