An original 18th-century view of Piazza di Monte Cavallo in Rome by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the square with the two equestrian statues and scenes of everyday life. Further back, seen from the front, is the large rectangular palace that dominates the square. To the right of the painting are other Roman palazzi seen from the side. The sky is overcast, with leaden clouds across the whole painting.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. There is another variant of this picture painted by Canaletto. The work is on display at Nottingham City Museums and Galleries (Nottingham Castle) UK.
