The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza di Monte Cavallo in Rome, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the square with two equestrian statues and scenes of daily life. Further back, seen from the front, there is the large rectangular palace that dominates the square. To the right of the painting there are other Roman buildings depicted from the side. The sky is cloudy, with leaden clouds extending across the entire painting.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. There is another version of this painting painted by Canaletto. The work is exhibited at the Nottingham City Museums and Galleries (Nottingham Castle), UK.
