The artwork

“Pallas and the Centaur”, painted by Sandro Botticelli at the end of the 15th century, is an emblematic work of Florentine Renaissance painting and its passion for mythological themes. The painting depicts the goddess Pallas Athena as she masters and restrains a centaur, a symbol of the irrational, wild nature of man.

The episode is rich in allegorical meaning: Pallas represents reason, virtue and moral control, while the centaur symbolises the instinctive drives and brute force to be contained. Botticelli uses delicate colours, sinuous lines and refined details to emphasise the elegance of the figures and the harmony of the composition. The natural background, with trees and hills, helps create a balanced, poetic scene in which myth and formal beauty intertwine. The work reflects the artist's interest in classical antiquity and in the fusion of symbolic narrative and aesthetic perfection.
