This planimetric and perspective map of the city of Palermo, created using the copper engraving technique in 1730, is the work of the Augsburg-based German publisher, cartographer, and engraver, Gabriel Bodenehr.

The work is included in the famous collection "Curioses Staats und Kriegs Theatrum beeder konigreich Neapolis und Sicilien", from around 1730. The collection focuses on the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, offering a combination of geographical maps, topographical views, and illustrations related to historical and military events in these regions. For example, well-known engravings of Messina and Palermo are taken from this work. This work falls within the genre of "Theatrum" (theatres), a popular format in the modern era that presented geographical, historical, and political notions through images and texts. "Curioses Staats und Kriegs Theatrum beeder konigreich Neapolis und Sicilien" represents an important cartographic and iconographic testimony of the eighteenth century, offering valuable visual information about the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily during that period.

Feel history under your fingertips

Our reproductions are extremely faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper composed exclusively of cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic deckled edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today following ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
