The work was created at a time of profound change for Italy, newly unified in 1861. Risorgimento enthusiasm was giving way to the practical challenges of building a nation. In this context, many artists, including the Macchiaioli, moved away from historical and celebratory themes towards more intimate subjects rooted in everyday reality, often with a particular focus on the rural, peasant world.
In Fattori's painting, the oxen, massive and powerful, are depicted with great dignity as they haul a cart. The scene is dominated by a clear light, typical of the Tuscan countryside, which brings out the volumes of the animals and the dust raised by their tread. The horizon is often low, giving prominence to the sky and lending the subjects monumentality. The human figure, when present, is often included discreetly, almost subordinate to nature and to the animals, symbols of an ancient and unchanging labour.
