The artwork

Painted between 1864 and 1866, the subject of the painting is emblematic of Fattori's output: the Tuscan Maremma, a harsh and wild land, peopled by butteri and grazing animals. Fattori, a native of Livorno, was deeply attached to this region, which he portrayed in countless works, describing its harsh peasant life and the unspoilt beauty of its landscapes.

In "Ox Cart in the Tuscan Maremma", we see a group of Maremma oxen immersed in a suspended, almost metaphysical atmosphere. Light, a central element in Macchiaioli painting, plays a fundamental role: the strong contrast between lit and shaded areas creates a sense of depth and volume. The figures of the animals are rendered with a few essential brushstrokes, yet they convey a solid presence and a tangible truthfulness. The low horizon and the wide expanse of sky lend the landscape an almost epic monumentality.
