The artwork
“Horace Reading before the Circle of Maecenas” is a painting by Stefan Bakalowicz, a Russian artist active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his scenes set in ancient Rome.
The artwork depicts the poet Horace reading his own verses before the circle of Maecenas, the celebrated patron and adviser to the emperor Augustus. Around him sit Roman intellectuals, poets and nobles, gathered in an elegant, light-filled setting enriched with marble and classical decoration.
