"On Lookout" is an oil painting on canvas by the painter Giovanni Fattori, produced in 1872. The painting captures an intense scene of military life, in which three mounted soldiers are portrayed on a motionless watch patrol, struck by the relentless sun of an early summer afternoon.
Few but powerful elements complete the picture: an intense violet-blue sky and an arid ochre plain. The composition is pervaded by a profound stillness, the result of a skilful arrangement of volumes and an impeccable balance of spaces, which lends the work a monumentality almost suspended in time.
