An original and luminous 18th-century view of Walton Bridge, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Prominent on the right side is the bridge, with its first great arch followed by smaller ones, linking the opposite bank of the Thames. On the river are some boats, while on the bank to the right of the painting are scenes of everyday life. At the centre of the scene is the great tree, bent by the blowing wind. The sky has pale clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1755. Other variants of this picture painted by Canaletto exist. The work is on display at the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA.
