The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of Walton Bridge, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The bridge is prominent on the right side with its first large arch, followed by smaller ones connecting the opposite bank of the Thames. There are boats in the river, while on the bank to the right of the painting are scenes of everyday life. At the center of the scene there is the large tree, leaning in the wind. The sky features light clouds on the horizon, but the day remains clear.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1755. Canaletto painted other variations of this painting. The work is exhibited at the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA.
