Ocean Greyness (1953) represents a mature moment in Pollock's experimentation, in which gestural abstraction makes its way into a meditative yet restless chromatic context. On a large canvas, deep, layered greys form a dense ground from which emerge spatters, brushstrokes and floating marks suggesting eddies, currents and submerged memories. Among these nebulous atmospheres disembodied eyes can be glimpsed, symbols of an inner unease that escapes direct representation but conveys a sense of presence.
The forms oscillate between recognisability and dissolution, in an alternation of order and chaos that reflects the tension between emotional impulse and formal control. In this play of surfaces and meanings, the work invites a deep, individual and contemplative immersion, bringing to the surface the psyche of the artist and of viewers themselves.
