The artwork
Historical double-hemisphere world map created by Henricus Hondius II in 1641. It is a hand-coloured engraving.
The map shows the world as it was known in the first half of the 17th century. Both meridians and parallels are shown.
Outside the hemispheres are allegories drawn from mythology and the classical world, while portraits of illustrious figures appear on all four sides.
Henricus Hondius, or Hendrik Hondius the Younger (Amsterdam, 1597 – Amsterdam, 16 August 1651), was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher.
The son of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondt, who ran his own cartography business in Amsterdam, he initially worked in the family firm, but in 1621 he set up his own company in his native city. In 1641 he published the Mercator - Hondius Atlas.
