The artwork

A posing model, a stick of red chalk and a raised arm: this is how Pontormo sought movement from life. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Red chalk on paper: the warm red of Renaissance drawings.
  • A life study, restrained and modern, for a study, a bedroom or a bookcase.
  • A gift for those who draw and for lovers of sixteenth-century art.

Red chalk, a red stone used like a pencil, was the favourite material of Florentine draughtsmen: it marks softly, blends with a finger and gives skin a living colour. Pontormo used it to study figures from life; his models were often the workshop assistants, drawn in pose.

The sheet, from around 1525, is held at the British Museum in London and is among the drawings shown at the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome. It is Pontormo at his most direct. No saints, no stories: a body in motion and a hand that follows it.

In a study, in a bedroom or beside a bookcase: it is the gift for those who draw, for students of art and for anyone who loves the pared-back beauty of a single sheet.
