This splendid map of Rome is based on the influential 12-sheet wall map created by Giovanni Battista Falda and published in 1676. The map offers extraordinary detail, depicting streets, churches, houses, gardens, squares, bridges, and gates, with the Vatican prominent. The legends on the sides of the map include an index of no less than 473 locations.
The city, built on the famous Seven Hills, is surrounded by its ancient walls and traversed by the Tiber River. Numerous monuments and historical sites, still in existence today, are visible, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Castel Sant'Angelo, and the Vatican, dominated by the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and Gianlorenzo Bernini's great oval colonnade surrounding the square below.
The map is enriched with many allegorical representations. Saint Peter is depicted holding a large golden key, the figure of justice appears, and various figures in Roman attire animate the scene. All in all, a very decorative and detailed map.
This edition of the map dates to approximately 1710 and features a re-working of the title cartouche. The first edition was published in 1694 by Halma and van der Aa.
