This splendid view of the city of Nuremberg (historically also "Nuwenburg") on the lake, dating from 1648, was made using the etching technique by the well-known Swiss engraver and publisher Matthaeus Merian the Elder (1583-1650).
This work is part of the monumental collection Topographia Germaniae in 16 volumes, created in collaboration with Martin Zeiller (1589-1661), a German geographer and scholar. This series, published between 1642 and 1654, is one of the most comprehensive modern depictions of the German-speaking regions and surrounding territories. It covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Alsace and parts of neighbouring countries. Each volume focuses on a specific region or group of regions, with descriptive text by Zeiller and engravings by Merian and his workshop.
Topographia influenced cartography and urban studies for centuries and remains a valuable resource for historians and art collectors. The series exemplifies the era’s fascination with cataloguing and visually representing the world.
