The artwork

Nord-Sud is a work by Joan Miró made in 1923, at a crucial moment in his path towards Surrealism. The title refers to the Parisian magazine Nord-Sud, linked to the literary and artistic avant-gardes of the time, signalling Miró's dialogue with the cultural milieu of Paris.

The painting abandons traditional representation and is built instead through signs, symbols and floating forms, arranged on an open, non-perspectival picture space. Fine lines, graphic elements and measured colours create a poetic, allusive language in which meaning is not immediate but evocative. Nord-Sud bears witness to the birth of Miró's visual alphabet, made of essential signs and mental references, and represents a fundamental step from figuration to the full imaginative freedom that would characterise his mature art.
