She was painted in Egypt around AD 150, when the country was a province of Rome. The painter used encaustic, colours mixed with hot wax, on a wooden panel meant to be placed over the face of the mummy, among the bandages. It is one of the portraits we call Fayum portraits, after the region of Egypt where many were found.
The painter chose a few colours and used them well. The background is a pale blue grey, the robe is white, its folds made of broad and quick strokes, and on the face he placed all his attention: the rosy cheeks, the pale eyes, the small mouth. The gold earrings are the only luxury. Time has left cracks and some losses of paint, which are part of the panel's story; today it is in the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
In a sitting room it brings home a lady of Roman Egypt, serene and composed. It is an elegant gift.
