The artwork

In this painting there are no banks, no sky and no horizon: only the water of the pond, the water lilies and the reflections, so much so that at first glance it seems almost abstract. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Blue and violet lily pads, a few red flowers and long pale streaks hanging down from the top.
  • A large, deep canvas for the main wall of the living room.
  • A gift for anyone who loves modern art.

Monet had the pond dug in 1893 in the garden of his house at Giverny, in Normandy, and filled it with water lilies. From 1899 he painted it again and again, to capture every impression and every reflection of the flowers on the water.

Towards the end of the 1910s, when he began this canvas, Monet was over seventy-five and painting in a new way, fluid and daring. As the Metropolitan Museum puts it, the pond had become the starting point for an almost abstract art: forms dissolve into brushstrokes, and the painting reads as a field of colour.

The original, two metres wide, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which received it as a gift in 1983.

Above a sofa or in a spacious living room it becomes a window onto the water. It is a gift for anyone who loves twentieth-century painting and its boldest colours.
