A luminous and interesting perspective view from the Jüdenhof of the New Market, or Neuer Marktplatz, in Dresden, by Bernardo Bellotto. Prominent is the very large square, populated by citizens and a few stalls where bargaining is under way. The fine carriage in the centre of the square, drawn by Lipizzaner horses, dominates the scene. On the left, by contrast, is a handsome palace with a sumptuous staircase. The sky is clear and limpid, and the day is ideal for the market.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1749. It is one of the 14 views of the city of Dresden that Bellotto painted during one of his stays.
