A luminous and interesting perspective view of the new market, or Neuer Marktplatz, in Dresden, by Bernardo Bellotto. The very large square stands out, filled with townspeople and a few stalls where bargaining is under way. A notable feature is the fine carriage in the centre of the square, drawn by Lipizzaner horses. On the left is a handsome palace with a sumptuous staircase. The sky is clear and serene, an ideal day for the market.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1747. It is one of the 14 views of the city of Dresden that Bellotto painted during one of his stays.
