The artwork
A bright and interesting perspective view of the New Market Square or Neuer Marktplatz in Dresden, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. Highlights include the large square, filled with citizens and several stalls where trading takes place. Noteworthy is the beautiful carriage in the center of the square, pulled by Lipizzan horses. On the left side is a beautiful palace with a sumptuous staircase. The sky is clear and sunny, an ideal day for the market.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1747. It is one of 14 views of the city of Dresden that Bellotto painted during his stay.
