The artwork

In this scene, we witness a moment of joy and wonder. Saint Anne, who, given her advanced age, despaired of conceiving a child, became pregnant by God's will. And here, Giotto depicts the birth of her daughter, Mary. Three distinct scenes, brought together in a single image. The first moments after giving birth, when the women entrust the newborn Mary into Anne's arms, while another handmaid offers the new mother a piece of bread, to compensate for the effort of childbirth. Immediately below, the first bath, done with a little clean water and humble clothes.

Meanwhile, at the door, a woman delivers good luck gifts. Perhaps she is the wife of Scrovegni, the patron of the entire work. This image, set in Giotto's typical architecture, manages to convey a sense of spaciousness and dynamism to the scene.
