The Nativity of Jesus by Giotto di Bondone, frescoed between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, represents one of the most poetic moments of the cycle devoted to the life of Christ. The scene shows Mary lying beside the manger, tenderly contemplating the newborn Child, wrapped in swaddling clothes and watched over by the ox and the ass. Joseph, absorbed and pensive, sits apart, while above them the angels announce the birth to the shepherds, who hasten there full of wonder.
Giotto unites a sense of the sacred with domestic tenderness, introducing human emotions and natural gestures. The rocky landscape and the stable, built with a rigorous sense of space, help make the scene realistic and solemn. The artwork expresses faith embodied in everyday life, a symbol of the new pictorial language that would pave the way for the Renaissance.
