The artwork
The Nativity of Jesus by Giotto di Bondone, frescoed between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, represents one of the most poetic moments in the cycle dedicated to the life of Christ. The scene shows Mary lying beside the manger, tenderly contemplating the newborn Child, wrapped in swaddling clothes and watched over by an ox and a donkey. Joseph, absorbed and thoughtful, sits aside, while above them angels announce the birth to the shepherds, who rush in wonder.
Giotto combines a sense of the sacred with domestic tenderness, introducing human emotions and natural gestures. The rocky landscape and the hut, constructed with rigorous spatial awareness, contribute to making the scene realistic and solemn. The work expresses faith embodied in everyday life, symbolizing the new pictorial language that paved the way for the Renaissance.
