The artwork
Multiform (1948) represents one of the decisive turning points in Mark Rothko's artistic research, when the artist definitively abandoned figuration to approach the language that would make him famous. The work shows irregular areas of colour that seem to float on a luminous background, without defined outlines or rigid structures. The forms — patches, clouds, fragments of colour — are arranged in unstable balance, creating a vibrant visual rhythm. Rothko does not seek to depict objects, but to evoke primary sensations: unease, openness, spirituality.
The colours, layered in thin glazes, give off an inner light that envelops the viewer and draws them into a suspended mental space. Multiform is a transitional work, yet it already reveals the poetics of colour as an emotional vehicle. In it one can glimpse the roots of his future colour-field compositions, where painting becomes an immersive and deeply contemplative experience.
