The artwork
“Cow and Violin” , painted by Kazimir Malevich around 1913, is one of the most emblematic works of his cubo-futurist period and of his ironic approach to traditional art. The painting combines seemingly irreconcilable elements, a cow and a violin, placing them in a fragmented, dynamic and playful composition. The choice of subject has a provocative function: Malevich intended to challenge the aesthetic and narrative conventions of academic art, showing that any object could become the protagonist of a modernist work.
The geometric depiction, bright colours and loss of perspectival logic reflect the influence of Cubism, while the energy of the forms and the sense of movement recall Futurism. The work is a manifesto of artistic freedom: breaking with reality to create a new visual language. “Cow and Violin” marks a crucial step towards the total abstraction of Suprematism in the years that followed.
