The artwork
Original and luminous view of the church of Santa Maria della Salute, with a detail of the Punta della Dogana, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal with its boats, some of which are arranged on the quayside, and the pier, with scenes of daily life. On the left side there is the church of Santa Maria della Salute, slightly veiled by the sunset light. On the opposite side there are Venetian palaces arranged side by side along the bank of the Grand Canal. The sky is clear with a few pinkish-white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is exhibited at Culzean Castle, Maybole, Scotland. Other variations of this work exist.
