The artwork
Tahitian Mountains is a work reflecting Paul Gauguin’s deep bond with the Polynesian landscape, experienced as a place of spiritual regeneration and a return to primordial nature. The painting presents a mountain range with soft, massive outlines, rendered in intense, non-naturalistic colours typical of the artist’s Post-Impressionist language. The mountains emerge as almost mysterious presences, merging with the lush vegetation and luminous atmosphere of the island. In the foreground there often appear Tahitian female figures, calm and contemplative, or simple elements of the landscape that help create a sense of balance and inner calm.
Gauguin does not aim at a realistic description, but at evoking the spirituality of nature, translating the landscape into a symbolic and poetic vision. Tahitian Mountains thus becomes an idealised portrait of Polynesia, a place suspended in time that embodies the artist’s longing to rediscover authenticity and harmony.
