Mont Sainte-Victoire is one of Paul Cézanne's most famous subjects, painted in numerous versions between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The mountain, observed near Aix-en-Provence, becomes the focus of a pictorial investigation based on volume, colour and structure. Cézanne does not aim at a realistic representation, but at building the landscape through planes of colour and geometric brushstrokes, creating depth and harmony.
The work conveys balance, solidity and contemplation, and is considered fundamental to the evolution of modern art and Cubism.
