The artwork
A romantic and shadowy historical view of the Molo in Naples painted in 1711 by Gaspare Vanvitelli. The rendering of the shadows is very accomplished. The moored boats and those arriving at the dock are prominent, painted in dark colours that contrast with the bright sky blue streaked with a few clouds. The Castle is painted in the background at the top.
The work is on display in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
