Modern Rome by Giovanni Paolo Pannini is one of the artist’s most celebrated works, in which the city is exalted as the capital of Christianity and a cultural center of the eighteenth century. Unlike his views of ruins and antiquities, here Pannini depicts the modern monuments of Rome, especially those tied to the papacy and the Baroque, gathered together in a single, grand ideal composition.
The scene presents famous buildings such as St. Peter’s Basilica, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and other recent architectures, arranged as though in an imaginary gallery. In the foreground appear figures of visitors, prelates, scholars, and townspeople who observe and discuss the works, transforming the view into a pictorial catalogue of contemporary Rome.
