The artwork
The Models (Les Poseuses), painted by Georges Seurat between 1888 and 1889, shows three nude models in different poses in a room, offering a direct glimpse into the artist's creative process. The figures are not idealised: Seurat depicts the human body with anatomical precision and attention to volume, anticipating his scientific research into light and colour.
The composition is rigorously balanced, with each figure arranged geometrically, highlighting the analytical method that characterises Seurat's work. Although it predates the full development of pointillism, the work already shows the artist's interest in luminosity and contrast, fundamental to his later technique. The Models represents a fusion of scientific observation and poetic sensibility, documenting life in an artist's studio in Paris and the transformation of the human figure into a subject of rigorous visual enquiry.
