The artwork

“Alla mietitura” (sometimes translated as During the Harvest or At the Harvest) is a painting by Kazimir Malevich from around 1912–1913, during his cubo-futuristperiod. The work depicts a group of peasants at work in the fields, a recurring theme in the artist’s early output, deeply bound up with his rural origins in Ukraine. Yet the depiction is not realistic: the figures and the landscape are broken down into geometric planes of colour that convey energy and continuous movement.

Through broken forms and intense colours, Malevich interprets the harshness and dynamism of agricultural life, combining them with a modern vision of labour as a driving force of social change. This work clearly bears witness to the transition between the figurative period and the progressive abstraction that would lead to Suprematism. At the Harvest is now considered a fundamental piece in Malevich’s stylistic development and in the rise of the Russian avant-garde.
