The artwork
Even Vincent van Gogh, the painter of sunflowers par excellence, could not bring himself to say in an 1888 letter that his own were finer than Monet's. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A large bunch of sunflowers in a vase on a red tablecloth.
- Warm yellows on a blue ground: a picture that lights up a kitchen or a dining room.
- A gift for anyone who loves flowers and home.
In November 1888 Van Gogh was living in Arles, in the south of France, with the painter Paul Gauguin. In a letter he wrote that Gauguin had seen a painting by Monet of sunflowers in a large Japanese vase and found it very fine, although he preferred Vincent's. Van Gogh added that he was not of that opinion.
Monet had painted his sunflowers in 1881 at Vétheuil, the village on the Seine where he then lived: they grew along the path in his garden. In those years he had taken up painting flowers, both outdoors and cut, indoors. When he showed this picture at the Impressionist exhibition of 1882, critics praised the brio and daring of his painting. The original is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
In a kitchen or a dining room it brings summer all year round. It is a gift for anyone who loves flowers, or who knows Van Gogh's sunflowers and would like to discover Monet's.
