The Massacre of the Innocents by Giotto di Bondone is a powerful and dramatic fresco from the cycle devoted to the Life of Christ in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (around 1305). The artwork depicts the tragic Gospel episode in which Herod orders the killing of the children of Bethlehem, fearing the birth of the Messiah. Giotto transforms the scene into a moment of intense humanity and pathos: desperate mothers struggle to save their children, the soldiers act with ruthless energy, while collective grief pervades the composition.
The power of the narrative is heightened by the realism of the gestures, the coherent construction of space and the skilful use of light, which brings out the faces and emotions.
