The artwork
The Massacre of the Innocents by Giotto di Bondone is a powerful and dramatic fresco from the cycle dedicated to the Life of Christ in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (circa 1305). The work depicts the tragic Gospel episode in which Herod orders the killing of the children of Bethlehem, fearing the birth of the Messiah. Giotto transforms the scene into a moment of intense humanity and pathos: the desperate mothers fight to save their children, the soldiers act with ruthless energy, while collective grief pervades the composition.
The power of the narrative is amplified by the realism of the gestures, the coherent spatial construction, and the skillful use of light, which highlights the faces and emotions. In this work, Giotto transcends Byzantine rigidity, creating a lively and earthly representation, in which the tragedy becomes universal and profoundly human.
