The artwork
Giovanni Fattori's painting "Mary, Queen of Scots at Crookstone Field," housed in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti in Florence, is a significant work in the Livorno-born painter's artistic career. Although dated 1861, Fattori is believed to have completed it around 1859, perhaps postdating it to present it at the First National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Florence.
Mary, Queen of Scots, a complex and tragic figure in Scottish and European history, is known for her turbulent love and political affairs, culminating in her execution on the orders of her cousin Elizabeth I of England. Fattori's painting depicts her after the defeat of her troops at the Battle of Langside (1568), a pivotal event that forced her to seek refuge in England, where she was later imprisoned.
