The artwork
The Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand, made by Albrecht Dürer in 1508, is a woodcut depicting the bloody execution of ten thousand Christian soldiers according to hagiographic tradition. The artwork shows Dürer’s extraordinary ability to depict complex and dramatic scenes with great precision and meticulous detail.
Every figure is rendered with attention to gesture, expression and anatomy, creating a sense of depth and movement. The architectural and landscape background provides context and perspective, typical of the fusion of Northern sensibility and Italian Renaissance influences. Dürer uses chiaroscuro to heighten the drama of the scene and to guide the viewer’s eye through the composition. The print not only records a religious and legendary episode, but also bears witness to the artist’s ability to unite narrative, symbolism and technical mastery.
