The Marriage of the Virgin by Giotto di Bondone, painted around 1304-1306 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph, an episode drawn from the apocryphal Gospels and the Legenda Aurea. At the centre of the scene, the High Priest unites the couple in marriage, placing their hands one in the other as a sign of consecration. In his left hand Joseph holds the flowering rod, symbol of the divine sign that had chosen him as Mary’s husband. On either side, the virgins and the rejected young men – one of whom breaks his own rod in anger – enliven the scene with realism and emotional vivacity.
Giotto organises the space with balance and depth, placing the figures beneath a sober and solemn architecture recalling the Temple. The artwork bears witness to the artist’s ability to fuse spirituality and humanity, anticipating the perspective and narrative sense of the Renaissance.
