The artwork
The Marriage of the Virgin by Giotto di Bondone, painted around 1304-1306 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph, an episode taken from the Apocryphal Gospels and the Golden Legend. At the center of the scene, the High Priest unites the two spouses in marriage, placing their hands together as a sign of consecration. Joseph holds the flowering staff in his left hand, symbolizing the divine sign that designated him as Mary's husband. To the sides, the virgins and the rejected youths—one of whom breaks his staff in anger—animate the scene with realism and emotional vivacity.
Giotto organizes the space with balance and depth, placing the figures beneath a sober and solemn architecture reminiscent of the Temple. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to blend spirituality and humanity, anticipating the perspective and narrative sense of the Renaissance.
