This painting is the work of Sir Anthony van Dyck, created around 1623 during his stay in Genoa. The Marchesa Elena Grimaldi Cattaneo advances on the terrace of her Genoese palace, wrapped in a severe black dress with red cuffs and an elaborate lace collar, while an African servant protects her with a large red umbrella that breaks the dominant dark chromatic scheme of the scene. The classical columns behind her and the stormy landscape in the background enhance the monumentality of the figure, transforming her into an icon of rank and aristocratic authority.

The work belongs to Van Dyck's "Genoese phase", when the Flemish painter worked for the city's noble elite, enriched by maritime trade and closely linked to the Spanish court. In this context, the portrait responds to the need for social celebration: the Marchesa is represented with a mixture of Spanish solemnity and Baroque grace, reflecting both the international taste of the Genoese nobility and the artist's particular ability to capture the aspirations and the "spirit of nobility" of his patrons.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
